Empowering the Next Generation: Camp 911 Ignites Passion for Public Service

In the heart of Baraga, Michigan, the 24th Annual Camp 911 has become a beacon of hope, inspiring the next generation of first responders and community leaders. This two-day event, hosted by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Police, has been a transformative experience for over 20 children from various schools across Baraga County.

Unlocking the Secrets of Public Safety

Hands-On Exploration of Emergency Response

The children in attendance at Camp 911 were immersed in a world of hands-on experiences, honing their skills in injury and illness prevention, CPR and first aid, and bleeding control. Through interactive demonstrations and activities, they gained a deeper understanding of the scientific and mathematical principles that underpin the work of first responders. From search and rescue operations to hazardous materials decontamination, the children were given a glimpse into the diverse responsibilities of these dedicated professionals.

Discovering the Thrill of Public Service

Beyond the practical skills, Camp 911 aimed to inspire the children to consider careers in public service. Representatives from various agencies, including the Department of Natural Resources, the Coast Guard, UPPCO, the Baraga Fire Department, and local law enforcement, shared their expertise and passion for their respective fields. The children were captivated by the demonstrations, from the Jaws of Life to the controlled fire pits, and were given the opportunity to board a Coast Guard vessel and don firefighter gear.

Fostering a Sense of Community

The highlight of the event was the interactive Fire Safety House, where children learned crucial fire escape techniques and the importance of closing bedroom doors to prevent the spread of flames and toxic gases. The children also had the chance to interact with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Police and their canine companions, learning about the different tasks performed by these specialized officers.

Celebrating Newfound Knowledge

The camp culminated in a relay race, where the children put their newly acquired safety skills to the test. As they crossed the finish line, the children were rewarded with ice cream, bike helmets, fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, and first aid supplies – tangible reminders of the valuable lessons they had learned.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Heroes

Gary Wadaga, the Director of Bay Ambulance and Program Director of Camp 911, expressed the profound impact of the event, stating, "That itself is great, but also knowing that you're giving them information that could keep them out of trouble is also rewarding." The excitement and enthusiasm the children brought home each night to their parents is a testament to the lasting impression Camp 911 has made on these young minds. As the sun sets on another successful Camp 911, the community of Baraga can take pride in the seeds they have sown, nurturing the next generation of first responders and community leaders. This annual event stands as a shining example of how a commitment to public safety and community engagement can inspire and empower the youth, paving the way for a brighter future.
