Kids on the Creek splashes back into Eastport after three-year hiatus

Unlocking the Wonders of Annapolis' Waterways: Kids on the Creek Empowers the Next Generation

In the heart of Annapolis, a remarkable initiative is taking shape, one that aims to bridge the gap between children and the natural wonders that surround them. The Spa Creek Conservancy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring the creek's health, has spearheaded the "Kids on the Creek" event, a free day of exploration, education, and hands-on experiences that is set to captivate the young minds of the community.

Empowering Annapolis' Youth to Embrace their Aquatic Backyard

Introducing Children to the Wonders of Waterways

The "Kids on the Creek" event is a testament to the Spa Creek Conservancy's commitment to ensuring that all children in Annapolis have access to the city's waterways. Donna Jefferson, a member of the conservancy's board, recounts a poignant encounter with a child who was unaware that ducks could fly, highlighting the importance of providing educational opportunities that bridge this knowledge gap. "Some kids live near the water here in Annapolis, but they don't have access to the water," Jefferson explains. "With Kids on the Creek, we hope to open children and their families' eyes to what's available in their backyard."

Reviving a Cherished Community Event

The "Kids on the Creek" event was first launched in 2018, offering a day of free food, crafts, and hands-on water activities. After a brief hiatus due to the closure of water access at Truxton Park, the event is set to make a triumphant return on August 24th, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Eastport Yacht Club. Virginia Tippee, the Eastport Yacht Club coordinator for the event and a retired oceanographer, expresses her excitement about the new venue, stating, "It will be a great opportunity for kids to experience the water through swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, and boating."

Fostering a Deeper Connection to the Environment

The driving force behind "Kids on the Creek" is the Spa Creek Conservancy's desire to cultivate a deeper appreciation and concern for the local waterways among Annapolis' youth. "We started Kids on the Creek because we wanted all kids to have the opportunity to get out on the creek and enjoy it," Jefferson explains. "Our thinking is that if they enjoy it, then they will have more concern about it and eventually help us clean it up."

Engaging Experts and Providing Hands-on Experiences

The event will feature a range of activities designed to educate and inspire the young participants. A biologist and other waterway professionals will be on hand to share their knowledge about the Chesapeake Bay and the diverse ecosystem that thrives within the creek. Additionally, Capital SUP, a local stand-up paddle board and kayak rental business, will provide water equipment, allowing the children to directly engage with the waterways.

Addressing the Need for Increased Public Water Access

The "Kids on the Creek" event also shines a light on the broader issue of public water access in Annapolis. Kevin Haigis, the owner of Capital SUP, emphasizes the need for more public access points, stating, "There's so much waterfront and so much has been privatized. It's been a joy to coordinate with Spa Creek Conservancy and Eastport Yacht Club to help provide access."

Fostering a New Generation of Environmental Stewards

The "Kids on the Creek" event is more than just a day of fun and exploration; it is a strategic investment in the future of Annapolis' waterways. By introducing children to the wonders of the creek and providing them with hands-on experiences, the Spa Creek Conservancy hopes to cultivate a new generation of environmental stewards who will take an active role in preserving and protecting these vital natural resources.
